SCOTT GILMOUR AND CLAIRE MCKENZIE - MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSICALS TOGETHER
A collaboration that began almost by accident in 2012 between Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie has grown into an award-winning partnership that has already spawned a dozen musical projects. Their UK-based company Noisemaker, known for turning good stories into great musicals, has worked with Dundee Repertory Theatre, American Music Theatre Project(AMTP) at Northwestern University, The National Theatre of Scotland, Goodspeed Musicals, Mercury Musicals, The Sheffield Crucible Theatre and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where they are graduates and first met in 2009.
Their professional association started three years later with FREAKSHOW, an immersive experience that received the 2012 Daily Mail Drama Award and was showcased at On the Verge in Glasgow. FOREST BOY followed a year later receiving the 2013 S & S Award, one of the UK’s most prominent prizes for new musical theatre writing. In 2015, the team was selected for the New Voices Project of New Musicals, Inc. and Walt Disney Imagineering and numerous projects followed, including a partnership and residency with Northwestern’s AMTP and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland that lead to the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe production of ATLANTIC: A SCOTTISH STORY which received the 2017 Harold Angel Award.
When we met at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall recently, Scott and Claire had just returned from the 2018 Fringe where their new production, MY LEFT/RIGHT FOOT - THE MUSICAL, presented with Birds of Paradise Theatre Company and National Theatre of Scotland, won the prestigious Fringe First Award and the 2018 Herald Angel Award. Their next project with Dundee, HI, MY NAME IS BEN, is based on the fascinating true story of a man who changed the lives of his New York City neighbors without saying a word.
There is much more about the extraordinary musical story of Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie in our delightful CONVERSATION, including news they will be back in Chicago for a residency with Northwestern’s AMTP early next year and then on to Connecticut for the 2019 Goodspeed/Dundee Rep production of HI, MY NAME IS BEN at the Terris Theatre from May 19th through June 9th.
