"There is a man in there."
THE HEAVENS ARE HUNG IN BLACK
What's it about ... Lincoln's dreams and reality converge in the wake of the grief of his own son's death, the deafening realization of the escalating human costs of the war and the rancor of those opposed to his plans for emancipation.
Why you should go ... originally commissioned by Ford's Theatre for its reopening in 2009, Shattered Globe Theatre presents the Chicago premiere of Pulitzer Prize nominee James Still's impassioned historical saga in a searing and profound production that reveals Lincoln's anguish and intense personal conflict.
Who's who ... Lawrence Grimm's Lincoln is effortlessly in command - as stirring and memorable a performance as you may ever see. Linda Reiter's riveting portrayal of Mary Todd is mesmerizing.
What stands out ... Louis Contey's throughtful production elevates the depth and sincerity of these complex characters. The original music and sound design by Christopher Krista, set design by Angela Weber Miller, lighting and projection by Michael Stanfill, costumes by Madison Briede and Hailey Rakowiecki all combine to evoke the period and a presidency under siege.
Who to watch ... the strong ensemble cast in multiple roles features Darren Jones, Don Bender, Brad Woodward, Jennifer Cheung and Zach Bloomfield. The supporting cast includes Drew Schad, Kelsey Colleen Melvin, Tim Newell and Leo Sharkey as Tad Lincoln.
What are the takeaway's ... "Every dream is a hidden door." ... "It's never too late to make a little history."
